Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs are the rebels in grammar. They do not follow the typical rules of adding “~ed” or “~d” to form their past simple tense or past participle. 

For the most part, you need to simply memorize these unique formations. You can also learn to memorize certain patterns in these irregular verbs. 

Some irregular verbs stay the same when turned into past tense or past participle.

• bet (present tense), bet (past tense), bet (past participle) 
• cut, cut, cut
• hurt, hurt, hurt 
• hit, hit, hit

Some irregular verbs have past tense that has an “o” sound and past participle that ends in “~en”.

• rise (present tense), rose (past tense), risen (past participle)
• write, wrote, written
• break, broke, broken
• choose, chose, chosen
